tonight, dramatic new images of the wave of destruction. as the tsunami demolishes everything in its path in japan. >> now, desperate for aid after the disaster, thousands of miles away, a tour of the damage here in the bay area. >> it's heart-breaking, to see this kind of damage to appear someplace you call home. >> good even right now in japan, it's just after 11:30 sunday morning, and just about an hour ago, a powerful 6.2 aftershock shook off the eastern coast as the country reels from that 8.9 earthquake. and all eyes are still on that

nuclear complex where an explosion occurred. the country's nuclear safety agency says there's another emergency at the same site. rescuers are looking for the missing along hundreds of miles of coastline with many areas still unreachable. the death toll stands at 696, where that number certainly expected to rise. the tsunami that raised across the pacific slammed into northern california airports. and some harbors are still closed. we took a tour of the district in santa cruz. >> reporter: from the water, we get a closer look at the damage left by the tsunami in the santa cruz harbor. >> it's devastating. >> reporter: state and local agencies took boat tours sinking 18 boats in and ripping docks apart. >> it's a lot of damage as you can down eastern fairway here,

it's unsafe to motor there. >> reporter: much of the debris is still under water, some of it is being pulled out, some purpose purposefully left on the bottom. there's always a pollution concern. >> reporter: they are looking for the sheen of oil in this murky water. >> we figuratively dodged a bullet because awful boats on the bottom of the harbor are pleasure craft. >> reporter: which means they can just hold a few gallons of gas, unlike the ones in crescent city. >> as soon as we move the boats, the oil will come to the surface. >> reporter: and they are experiencing surges today. the boat pay the tore said he was operating around 7 knots, about 8 miles an hour, and was at a standstill for about five minutes. >> we had a natural disaster. >> reporter: lee runs boats on the harbor and lost about $60,000 of equipment. >> reporter: with the harbor closed, he wasn't able to save

much. >> it's a joke. sickening. they want to keep us from our property, but they don't want to do anything to save anything. >> reporter: the magnitude of which is still being assessed. >> it's hard-breaking, you know, -- heart-breaking to see this damage occur, someplace you call home, and also you know, where you've been employed. it's overwhelming. in parts of northern california, they did not suffer damage from a tsunami. this was shot in emeryville by mark, and he positioned on youtube. -- he positioned it on youtube. there must have been a larger wave hitting. in crescent city, the young man swept tout to sea is identified as 25-year-old dustin weber. crest sent city saw the highest tsunami waves in the u.s., 8-foot surges. the tsunami continued to create

dangerous currents, the crew are waiting for safer conditions before they start to clean up. >> we do get a small tsunami once in a while, a surge, and this is the worst i've ever experienced. >> damage in crescent city is expected to top $25 million. travelers arriving from japan at sfl had stories of chaos and confuse before flying out: families were reunited after nerve-racking hours. >> reporter: after experiencing one ever the most powerful earthquakes anywhere ever, the travelers in japan another challenge, just getting to an airport and getting a flight home of the we did talk with some as they arrived at sfo. >> the 8.9 quake and tsunami that rocked northeastern japan was felt throughout the country. tokyo, was spared from the worst. >> the whole city came to a halt.

that was it. the whole city came to a halt. >> reporter: passengers on flights out of japan arriving at sfo shared the stories with cbs 5. >> it took us about five hours to get to the airport today, and the airport was like chaos, because there were so many people, just couldn't find a flight. >> it just kept going and i thought this might take longer than usual. >> reporter: ray was in tokyo, his mother was on a plane flying back from dallas unaware of her son's predicament. >> i said i'm oh, but my flight want canceled of course. and i asked why. and he said didn't you see the news. >> reporter: and we saw how bad it was, and thankfully, i didn't know in advance, because i would have been panicked. i was really scared. i was really scared. it was midnight here when i heard about it, and i turned on

the tv, and it was everywhere, and i had no idea in japan where he was. he's going from meetings and other cities, from one city to another so i was trying to find out where he is, so i decided to text him, and he was able to text back and say i'm okay. >> reporter: okay, but with no way to get to the airport. >> the problem with the roads, they were all blocked, closed so there were lots of concerns about the bridges, the freeways were closed. >> i called them, they said they are assuming flights from noon japan time, and that's when i texted him and said you know, just get yourself to the airport. it seems like your flight is going to be on time, so do anything you can if it means walking to the airport, and i want you out of japan. doesn't matter, any our country. >> the only thing, i was working

air in downtown san francisco bagpipes and drums fitted the air in downtown san francisco today. thousands gathered for the city's 160th saint patrick aday parade and festival, getting into the spirit there. marchers made their way down to the civic center plaza where it wrapped up about an hour ago: the sun was shining on the irish today, wasn't it. >> corned beef and cabbage! sounds good right now, but it

turned out to be a nice start to the weekend, had a lot of sunshine out there. now the we've got a storm brewing off the coastline. out there right now, kind of calm, clouds are moving by, over looking the city of san francisco, looking pretty good so far. but we've the clouds off the coast, and there's a chance we could see some light showers, at least north of the golden gate bridge overnight. here's showing you some of the clouds, making their way towards the coast, thickening up right here. they are going start to push on shore, but it will take time before we get the rain going. if you have plans tomorrow, a mostly cloudy day, a better chance of rain in the afternoon, and it looks like showers are going to make their way across the bay area tomorrow. numbers outside, not too bad, 50s and a couple low 60 's around the state, we are going to see more rainfall, the further north you go. also in eureka, the high

country, yep, we have a mixture of some rain and snow. these are warm storms that are approaching the coastline, that's going to keep things unsettled and a bit wet. and a little slushy. here it is, you can notice this latching on some subtropical moisture. as the jetstream sets up, we'll see an increase of some rain overnight of the north of the golden gate bridge. let's see if we can time this out better. 7:00 tonight, clouds beginning to move across the skies, and probably thicken up throughout the night. there will be a chance of some light showers to the north, but otherwise into the bad. tomorrow, doesn't look too bad early on. watch what happens as we go through the day tomorrow, you'll notice the clouds will continue to increase and, yeah, here comes the chance of rain developing. especially heading into the afternoon, and it looks like we have a good cell moving through a good part of the area.

tomorrow night, possibly some showers left into monday. temperatures are going to look like this. probably 63 degrees in san jose, so not zoo bad there, 64 in morgan hill, and 62 in union city. east bay numbers running up mainly in the 60s, so this warm storm is going to keep the temperatures up a bit, plan about 64 brentwood, 63 in pittsburgh, and 63 in police ton. north bay, temperatures in pleasanton. north bay, temperatures in the -- it looks like we have a chance of rain about every day over the next sidas, there will be breaks in between the storms, and nothing looks too huge. another storm system will move in on tuesday, leftover showers into wednesday morning, and colder storm system heading into the latter part of the week. it will keep things wet and cooler towards next weekend. now. aubrey huff explains why he's no longer wearing the rally song, and selection sunday may
